Pastoral and Evangelizing Communication

This is an ADVANCED level course and should not be attempted without sufficient grounding in the basics of the Catholic faith.
This course starts by examining the theological approaches to communication, followed by a general review of Church’s approaches to communication. After examining the corporate communication of the Church and the contribution of the Church to communication in Society, it highlights the inherent communication dimension and dynamics of pastoral and evangelizing communications. Special attention is paid to the utilization of the means of communication such as interpersonal, group, mass and multimedia communication in ministry.

- Understand the role played by communication and various communications media in the mission and ministry of the church.
- Realize communication teachings in the Church documents into practical pastoral and evangelizing mission and ministry of the Church.
- Identify the role of various communications media in pastoral and missionary activity of the Church.
- Explain the importance and need of making the Church more communicative.
- Highlight the general approach of the Church to communication in practice.
- Give insights into how different communications media can be put to the service of the Gospel.
- Enable discussion and new insights into creative use of media of communication in ministry.
- Develop practical plans for pastoral ministry and evangelization programs.

- Establish the pastoral and evangelizing communication on a proper theological foundation.
- Elucidate current theological approaches to communication.

- Semana 2: Church and Communication
- Analyze critically the corporate communication of the Church.
- Clarify Church’s approaches to communication in practice.
- Show the connection between models of the Church and the communication style.
- Highlight the actual and possible contributions Church can make to communication in society.
- Clarify the connection between communication style and the pastoral and evangelizing mission of the church.
- Semana 3: Pastoral Communication of the Church
- Understand the communication dimension of the pastoral ministry of the Church.
- Define the roles of the various pastoral personnel in communicating the gospel.
- Make preaching, liturgy and catechesis more communicative.
- Emphasise the prophetic role of the Church in the Society dominated by media.
- Semana 4: Evangelizing Communication
- Show that evangelization is basically a communication process.
- Analyze the new directions of evangelizing communication in the context of modern communication technologies.
- Understand the communication processes in the pre-evangelization, evangelization and post-evangelization.
- Promote dialogue and inculturation as the privileged means of evangelization today and preeminently as communication process.
- Semana 5: Means for Pastoral and Evangelizing Communication
- Explore the possibilities offered by communications media for pastoral and evangelizing communication.
- Highlight the opportunities offered by the modern electronic media in Church communication.
- Balance the use of traditional and modern media in pastoral and evangelizing communication.
- Shed light on the strengths and weaknesses of the present Church in communication.
