Flyer News UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON WOMEN'S RUGBY CLUBSeptember 14, 2009Contact: Lee Burton 859-781-7700 lee@rwai.com UD FIGHTIN' FLYERS WOMEN'S RUGBY CLUB OPEN FALL LEAGUE SEASONThe University of Dayton Women's Rugby Club opened their fall league season this past weekend losing to Wright State, 27-7, at Wright State. Dayton competes in Women's Collegiate DII. The women's team was hit hard by graduations in key positions. New players with excellent potential have arrived on scene as replacements, but this edition of the Flyer's is somewhat inexperienced. On the other hand, while Wright State is a young team, their veteran players were in the key positions that applied constant pressure to the UD defense. Overall, UD defended well, but Wright State was able to make some sustained marches down the field. UD's brightest moment was 2 sharp, well timed passes to Inside Center Kelsey Russel who raced 30 yards to score a try. Russel then kicked the 2-point conversion for all of Dayton's points. The Flyers return to the practice field this week to tune-up for league opponent Kent State in two weeks. The Flyers will be hosting alumni on campus this Saturday for a scrimmage. The UD Women's Rugby Club is an intramural sport that has played continuously since 1987. In 2005, the club competed in the DII national championship game. The team practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, 6pm, on the NCR fields on Stewart Street, just west of Brown near the band tower. Practices are now underway for the fall season. No experience necessary to join. |
