Upcoming Events

  • Guest Speaker
On October 1st, 2004 the UD Student Chapter of HFES will welcome Gregory Barbato from the United States Air Force Research Laboratory. Mr. Barbato will address the chapter and guests on the UD campus at 9:00AM in St Joe's, room 325.

Over the last 30 years, the disciplines of experimental psychology and human factors have undergone sometimes subtle, sometimes monumental, transformation. Mr. Barbato will talk about some of the differencesÑand similaritiesÑbetween mid-1970Õs human (pilot) factors work for the KC-135 aerial refueler crewstation, and a recently completed effort to improve cockpit information in the C-17. He will also discuss his current interest in human performance modeling and describe how technological advancement is constantly altering how human-machine interface evaluations are conducted.

What is human factors?

Human factors is the discovery and application of principles concerning human behavior and characteristics to the design, evaluation, operation, and maintenance of products and systems that are intended for safe, effective, satisfying use by people.  Human factors professionals employ the systems approach to design, in which the appropriate role of the user is first defined.  The system is then designed to reflect the users information needs, sensory and mental capabilities, and physical characteristics.  Evaluations are performed to verify the acceptability of designs.

Human factors professionals work in industry, government, and academia.  Their common objective is to improve the usability of equipment and products and the quality of working and living environments.  They train others in the principles of human factors, develop new principles, and apply these principles to the design of environments and products.  (Human Factors and Ergonomics Society)

How can you become a member of the UD HFES student chapter?

Becoming a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society student chapter is easy.  First, you need to have an interest in the field and a desire to learn more about it.  You also need to be a student at the University of Dayton.  Finally, you need to complete an application and pay the annual dues of $20.

If you are interested please contact Taylor Anderson in St. Joseph's Room 313, (440) 522-0588 (cell Day/Evening).
