Non-Weekly Service Activities

Into the Streets

Within the structure of the Week in Solidarity with the Homeless (W.I.S.H.) week, we perform social and creative service projects to aid people in our community.  Our favorite activity is to dress in Halloween costumes and go "trick-or-treating" for canned goods in nearby Oakwood.  These canned goods are then given to local food pantries.

Christmas on Campus

This activity comprises perhaps the most cherished tradition on the UD Campus, and we enjoy being a part of it.  We adopt some children, and sometimes a whole family, giving them a special Christmas party.  We also organize and staff game booths at the Carnival and sponsor decorations for the Mass.

Food and Clothing Drive

This project, though sponsored by us, works with the entire student body in collecting food and clothes and distributing them to shelters and pantries in Dayton.  Students are unbelievably generous when they're cleaning out their closets and kitchens before moving back home for the summer, and we take full advantage, filling vanloads and roomfuls of donations, to supply these charities with provisions for the summer months.

SVDP Home Visits

We work with other Vincentians from the local Dayton parishes, attending their meetings and participating in the visits to the residences of families in poverty.  This activity provides us with valuable experience in how to treat those who are down on their luck.  It also helps us to learn how the St. Vincent de Paul Society helps those in need.
