WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE BEEN ASSAULTED

Get to a safe place.

Call the police.

     Important telephone numbers:
UD Public Safety: 911 (from UD phones)
937-229-2121 from cell phones or off campus

Even if you report your assault to the police, you do not have to prosecute. A police report can possibly assist the police in the future should someone else report an assault by the same assailant.

Tell someone you trust.
It is important to get support so tell a friend, your RA, a family member, or call a crisis line.

Preserve evidence.
Do not bathe, douche, or drink anything because you could wash away evidence. If you need to remove your clothing, place each item in a separate bag and take the items with you to the police or hospital.

Seek medical attention.
It is extremely important that you have a medical exam after an assault to treat any physical injuries and to be tested and/or treated for any sexually transmitted diseases contracted during the assault. If you are seeking medical attention within 48 hours of the assault, it is best to go to a hospital emergency room. If it has been over 48 hours since your assault, make an appointment with a medical doctor of your choice (the Health Center is one option).

NOTE: The emergency room bill for the evidence collection will be paid for by the jurisdiction where the assault took place if the survivor cooperates in the investigation. All other medical expenses for after care may be covered by the Ohio crime victim compensation fund.

Seek counseling as soon as possible.
It is important to seek counseling to deal with the emotional effects of an assault. There are support groups available free of charge. Refer to the resource list for numbers.

REMEMBER: IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT, YOU ARE NOT TO BLAME, YOU DID NOT DESERVE IT !!
