DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES: A CHALLENGE FOR US ALL

In 1989, Federal law created the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act which places certain requirements on universities, including the annual notification of all students and employees of university policies, Federal, State and local laws, health risks and counseling/treatment programs available concerning drugs and alcohol abuse.


UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON POLICIES

The University of Dayton expects all students and employees to adhere to University regulations, Federal, State and local laws concerning alcohol and other substances. The illicit and improper use, transfer, possession and/or sale of illegal drugs or alcohol and the possession and/or use of any drug paraphernalia are prohibited at the University of Dayton. Violators will be prosecuted in accordance with applicable laws and ordinances and will be subject as well to disciplinary action by the University. Sanctions may include, but are not limited to, counseling, fines, community service, referral to an educational or treatment program or separation from the University. Students are directed to the University of Dayton Student Handbook for specific details. Employees are directed to the University of Dayton Position Statement On A Drug-Free Workplace/ Workforce available through the Office of Human Resources.


SUBSTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAM

As an educational component of the University's discipline process, students involved in disciplinary violations in which their behavior indicates an alcohol or substance abuse problem may be required to participate in an alcohol/ substance abuse educational program. Students who have completed the educational program but continue to exhibit alcohol or substance abuse related behavioral problems may be referred to a comprehensive treatment program as a condition of continued enrollment at the University of Dayton. EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Employees who feel they may have an alcohol/ substance abuse problem are urged to contact the Employee Assistance Program. Further information may be obtained anonymously from the Office of Human Resources.

Students seeking assistance or further information on alcohol/ substance abuse are urged to contact the Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (937) 229-2229, Counseling Center (937) 229-3141, the Health Center (937) 229-3131, Campus Ministry (937) 229-3339, Office of Educational and Special Programs (937) 229-2229 or a member of the Residential Programs Staff. Employees should contact the Office of Human Resources (937) 229-2541.

The Counseling Center can provide individual counseling for students or The Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention can provide a referral to the University of Dayton Substance Education Program, to outside assistance or to Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or Adult Children of Alcoholics. Employee referral to the Employee Assistance Program is through the Office of Human Resources.
