Academic Organizations
These groups serve to further the study of a particular academic discipline and to employ professional techniques in the operation of club functions.
Coordinating Organizations
These groups are underthe direct advisement of university offices.
Fraternities/Sororities
Fraternities and sororities at the University of Dayton create smaller communities within the larger University environment for the purposes of facilitating growth in the areas of scholarship, personal and leadership development, campus involvement and community service. The creeds and rituals that guide the individual organizations are based on values and ethics that foster the highest ideals and behavior. Fraternities and sororities are committed to the overall mission and educational outcomes of the University of Dayton through the development and improvement of:
- servant leadership
- respecting self and others
- faith life and spirituality
- responsibility for self and community
- integrating learning
- honesty and integrity
Media
Media organizations work in collaboration with faculty/staff and technical advisors to help foster and maintain an atmosphere of free and
responsible discussion and of intellectual exploration on the campus. Through the implementation
of responsible editorial policies and journalistic procedures, they serve to voice student concerns and
coordinate student opinion. Membership on any publication staff is open to every student.
Professional Organizations & Honor Societies
Professional organizations are specialized organizations which coordinate their group life specifically to promote professional competency and achievement within their field of study. Professional organizations are typically open to male and female students, have minimum scholastic requirements for membership, and sponsor professional development programs that are of interest to students. These groups attract the best and the brightest students within an academic discipline. Each society restricts entrance according to specific standards which may include grade-point average.
Recreational/Club Sports
A Club Sport is a registered student organization formed by individuals with a common interest in a sport or activity that exists to promote and develop interest within a defined scope. Clubs are categorized by their purpose for existing.
Competitive Club Sports are created because the interest demands an opportunity for students other than varsity athletes or because no varsity team exists. The team trains and is eligible to compete and actively pursues participation in registered extramural, regional, national, or open tournaments/competitions. The sport is also governed by a National Governing Body (NGB) from an established NGB with developed standards of participation. They must also promote a balanced lifestyle of wellness and physical activity.
Instructional Clubs may compete in a few tournaments per year, but the main focus of the club is instruction, qualified instruction and advancement of specific skills and techniques. Instruction should cover the necessary physical and mental safety prerequisites for participation, as well as strategy, rules. Instruction should be provided for all levels of skill from beginner to advanced (examples include earning belts in martial arts, certifications, etc.).
Service Clubs

One of the most notable characteristics of UD students is their concern for others. While virtually every organization on campus provides some form of service function, the following list includes organizations whose primary mission focus on campus and community service.
Special Interest
Members of these organizations share a unique camaraderie that generates from each club's specific focus. Members are frequently organized groups of friends who enjoy working and recreating together.
