How to Join SAI

All regular and patroness members of Sigma Alpha Iota must be initiated by a college chapter.

Requirements

College students must fulfill the following membership requirements:

  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in music.
  • Complete one or more semesters at the university level (Delta Sigma Chapter requires one semester completed at the University of Dayton, as per university policy).
  • Achieve a cumulative GPA of between 2.5 and 2.9. (Delta Sigma Chapter requires a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA.)
  • Demonstrate outstanding musical ability.
  • Meet local MIT requirements.
  • Meet the financial obligations.
  • Pass the national MIT test.

Non-student members are women musicians not enrolled in a formal music curriculum. They must be trained sufficiently to earn a living in a music profession and be active in that profession. The non-student member must be approved by the SAI National President in consultation with the Province Officer. The non-student member automatically assumes alumnae status at the end of the fraternity year in which she is initiated.

Membership Categories

There are five different categories of membership in Sigma Alpha Iota.

COLLEGE MEMBERSHIP is available to women in organized chapters at one of over 175 music schools throughout the United States and is by invitation only. Non-students who are trained, active musicians, may also be asked by the college chapter to join this Greek music organization.

ALUMNAE MEMBERSHIP is available in local area alumnae chapters or the International Chapter, which includes members who live more than 50 miles from an organized alumnae chapter.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP insures the future of the fraternity by contributing to its financial base. Members who are up-to-date with or have completed Life Membership payments will receive Pan Pipes and may affiliate with an alumnae chapter. The cost of Life Membership is substantially less if payments are completed before graduation.

PATRONESS MEMBERSHIP is for women who support the arts in the community, and have been invited by a college or alumnae chapter to join SAI.

DISTINGUISHED MEMBERSHIPS of four types are offered by the National Executive Board:

  • MEMBER LAUREATE - an initiated member of the Fraternity who has achieved international distinction in the music profession.
  • HONORARY MEMBER - a woman who has achieved international distinction in the music profession who is not an initiated member of Sigma Alpha Iota.
  • NATIONAL ARTS ASSOCIATE - a man or woman who is nationally recognized for distinguished contribution to the arts.
  • FRIEND OF THE ARTS - a man or woman who is supportive of and actively involved in the arts at a local or regional level.
