Information about the Student Cadet Program can be
obtained from Lt. Joseph Cairo at Public Safety X92131 |
Students are actively involved in the total service
commitment of the department. As Public Safety employees, an average of 30
student cadets perform a wide variety of functions for the department and the
university community including:
- An escort service within the university community.
- Security for special functions and parties in the campus community area.
- Locking of administrative buildings at night, freeing officers for
additional patrol.
A cadet must be a full-time student in good academic standing at the
university, have a willingness to serve the university community in various
capacities, and undergo a background check. |
|
Who are the Cadets?
Although the job does hold an attraction for Criminal Justice majors, all
majors are welcome. English, Business, Pre-law, and Religious Studies are
just a few of the areas of study currently pursued by cadets. |
|
What do Cadets do? Cadet
security personnel are not police officers and do not act in that
capacity. A direct link to UD Police via radio provides proper support in
the event of a need for police assistance.
Management/Administrative duties: Each year, four upper-class members
of the program are chosen to fill supervisory positions. In addition to
acting as the official representatives of the cadets to the university
community, this four-person team is responsible for the hiring of new
student employees, monthly scheduling, and the day-to-day supervision of
the program. They work closely with the Patrol Lieutenant, who maintains
staff responsibility for the Student Security Program.
The cadets monitor and record activity in the university's traditional
residential halls. They are there to remind students of university policy
and the laws of the City of Dayton and the State of Ohio. If infractions
do occur, it is the duty of the cadet to inform Residential Programs or UD
Police officials, as appropriate. |

Student Security Escort Service
Between 7:00 P.M. and 3:00 A.M., 7 days a week, the cadets provide a
completely free student escort service. Using two 2000 Saturns, acquired
through the generosity of the Mothers Club and the support of
Residential Services. The program
provides safety escorts for UD students between campus buildings,
residence halls, and the student neighborhood. During 2003,
the escort service provided in excess of 16,000 free rides to UD students. During
the academic year school breaks, such as Christmas and Spring Break, the
escort service is provided by the police officers. |
|
Cadet Lock-up Patrol
Between 10:00 P.M. and 1:00 A.M., 7 days a week, the cadets patrol
and secure the campus buildings. They also admit authorized students,
faculty, and staff to these buildings and offices after hours. The
cadets watch for graffiti, vandalism, etc. They also watch for unusual
activity/suspicious persons on campus as they lock up each building. |
|
Special Events The cadets provide personnel to
supplement the police force at special campus functions. The duties
during these special events range from assisting officers with wrist
bands and crowd control to directing traffic.
|
|
New Student Orientation Weekend Every year, the
cadets return to campus a week early. During this week, they are given
department training such as fire extinguisher training, blood borne
pathogen education, university driver’s training, and department policy
and procedure training. The cadets then help first-year students and
their families by providing traffic control, giving directions, and
helping to unload vehicles and transfer belongings to the proper
residence halls during orientation weekend. |
|
Escort Service Dispatcher
The Escort Service Dispatcher takes phone calls from persons needing
escorts. He/she enters information into the computer database, relays
the information to the driver, and monitors the driver’s progress. They
will also attempt to reconnect with persons who have requested an escort
but have not been found by the driver. |
|
Escort Service Driver The Escort Service Driver
escorts students to and from campus facilities/residences dispatched to
him/her by the Escort Dispatcher. Escort drivers also provide random
escorts (person waves the escort vehicle down on the street). The escort
driver must first clear the call through the dispatcher and give him/her
the escort information, i.e. pick up point, drop off point, and name of
person being escorted. When the escort driver does not have an escort
waiting, he/she will patrol the campus and parking lots for extra
security. |
