The University of Dayton Rugby team sent 25 players to Slippery Rock, PA to compete in a one day tournament hosted by the Pittsburgh Rugby Club. The team entered an A side in the Cup division and a B side in the Bowl division.
The day started with a B side game against Penn State-Behrend. Tries from Steve English, Kevin Corcoran, and Damon Stachler led the team to an easy victory. Matt Gribbowicz made two conversions, and Ben Yost added a conversion and a penalty. A drop goal on the stroke of haltime was PSU-Behrend's only score of the match.
Up next, the A side opened its tournament against IUP. Playing without captain, Dave Klug, the rest of the team needed to step up in order to defeat IUP. A slow start saw IUP go up 3-0 on a penalty kick. Several minutes later, UD responded with a try by center Steve Pangle. The forwards won a solid scrum against their larger opponents to set up the first phase try from 22 meters out. Late in the first half, UD extended its lead when Jim Paszczykowski slipped through several tackles on the wing to touch down to make it 12-3 at halftime. The second half saw both teams exchange tries. UD's eightman David Whitney scored after Jack Brennan had kicked ahead a loose ball. The final score was 19-8. UD's fullback Ben Yost had a strong kicking display and second row Dave Coppiellie dominated the lineouts.
While the A side was finishing up game one, the B side took on Niagara's B side. After giving up and early try, the team went on to win by over 20 points. Justin Schaffer and Steve English connected for the try of the game when Justin opened up a gap for Steve to race through untouched for a 40 meter try.
The A side's second round game was against Syracuse. Syracuse opened the scoring with a long try from their outside center. UD scored off a lineout inside Syracuse's five meter line to tie 7-7. Matt Gribbowicz was the try scorer. Syracuse then kicked a penalty to make 10-7 at halftime. Injuries became a mounting factor at this point. Already missing three starters at the tournament, UD saw both props, a scrumhalf, and a fullback go off injured in this game. The team struggled to find any continuity in the second half, and Syracuse began to dominate the physical battle. Two tries made the final score 22-7.
After losing to Syracuse, the A side found itself in the third place game against Slippery Rock University. UD's makeshift lineup started out strong as fullback Jim Paszczykowski caught a wide pass and raced 30 meters to score a try. UD continued to control the rest of the first half, but could not score any more points. The second half saw Slippery Rock take advantage of a battered UD pack. Two B side backline players were forced into starting forward roles in the game. Justin Schaffer and Matt Gribbowicz played their new positions without hesitation. Slippery Rock's physical prowess was rewarded with a try in the second half. UD had a chance to break the deadlock with a few minutes remaining, but the ref failed to see a UD player breaking free with the ball when he blew his whistle saying there was no advantage. He mistakenly took away what looked to be a for sure try. UD responded with several minutes of strong play but could not get any points. When time ended, the ref called for a "kick-off" to settle the winner. Slippery Rock's kicker missed the first kick, and Dave Koehneman made UD's kick to "win" the game.
The B side was set to play Syracuse B in the final of the Bowl division, but Syracuse A side was playing in the Cup final. They didn't have enough players to play in both finals, and with rain looming, the ref and tournament organizers called the game and gave UD's B side the Bowl Division Championship.
