UD took on the University of Pitt on Saturday. UD definitely looked a little rusty in its first game of the season, but they still managed to pull out a 31-10 win. The B side also started the season with a 7-5 win. The team was pleased with the win, but they understand there is definitely room for improvement before league play begins next weekend.
In the opening minutes, UD kept the ball deep in Pitt's end of the field. The team had several try scoring opportunities, and finally the hard work paid off when Spencer Marsinek scored the first try of the season off of a scrum. Minutes later, winger Bob Schuster crashed over two defenders in the corner for the second try. A fortuitous bounce on chip kick led to a Dave Whitney try to make it 17-0 after 25 minutes of play. Pitt began to settle in, and the rest of the half was a stalemate until Pitt kicked a penalty at the end of the half.
The second half started with a Pitt try after some sloppy UD play inside their own 22. After a difficult conversion, the game was suddenly only 17-10. UD responded quickly though, scoring a try thanks to some tough tackling. Later in the half, Alex Barger took an offload to break through the line before beating the fullback and touching down. Fullback Quinn Macali kicked the team's conversions on the day. This brought the final score to 31-10.
The B-side game featured a lot of rookies making their UD debuts. There were several long breaks, but the team failed to score early on. Stephen "Firewater" Thoennes, Justin Schaffer, and Bob Dunn all had long runs in the early going. Kevin Rice made several tackles throughout the game. After going down 5-0, Freshman Ben Bialorucki scored a long try under the posts to make it 7-5 with only minutes to play.
