This past weekend the University of Dayton Men’s
Rugby team traveled to Wright State to take part in the President’s
Cup. Though UD did not take home the championship they played very
well against both Wright State and Wittenberg.
UD vs Wright State
Wright
State provided UD with excellent competition for the opening game.
Both teams played well with the score staying tied at 11 each until
the last few minutes of the game. Dayton's only
try came from swinging the ball out wide and being taken in by
Lucky. Taking advantage of penalties within Wright
State’s 40, Steve Friedmann kicked for a total of 9 points the one
kick in the last minutes giving UD a 14-11 victory.
UD vs Wittenberg
UD had a tough game
against Wittenberg in the finals. Both teams were evenly matched
and played exceptionally. After a slow first half, Wittenberg was
leading, but UD was not done yet. Dayton came out in the second
half and played a much better game, driving down the field on
offense and showing a much tougher defense.
Tries were scored by Q-Tip, Panda, and Hunt. Both teams
continued to score, but
Wittenberg managed to maintain a
narrow lead and win the match.
The UD B-side showed
great promise this weekend, also playing Wittenberg. Many rookies
stepped up and played a great game, and thanks to all the A side
players who stepped up to play a second game straight.
Tries were scored by Grant Mills, Justin Fetko.
The efforts of the team brought in a victory for UD's B-side.
