Rugby learns new tricks in annual showdown with alumni |
||||
The alumni of the Rugby team held a lead until the final moments, but could not hang on in the end as fatigue set in. They lost 27-26 on a breakaway late in the contest. Freshman Chuck DeRee and sophomore Chris Curren scored most of the team’s 27 points. "Those younger guys are good," said senior Matt Holmes. "Those guys get all the glory and we do all the work." The team admits the game was not as intense as some that they have had this season. "It was more of a laid back atmosphere," Holmes said. "The score was inconsequential, but they wanted to show us they still had it." Holmes admits the alumni still had a lot of skill. "They played well," Holmes said. "I learned a lot playing against those guys. It helps our team because they know all the little tricks and they can teach us. It really helps to have the former players back because then they can teach us and we want to represent them well."
The team faces the University of Kentucky next weekend before heading to Cincinnati for the National Championship. Though the Flyers beat the Wildcats earlier this year, the team is no pushover. "They are really big and strong," Holmes said. "They play a very physical game, which will help prepare us for three games in one day down in Cincinnati. "They’re not going to shy away from us. It will be a good test. We think we can beat them at the forwards." |
