The UD team took on Cincinnati in a pivotal league game on Friday night. Both teams entered the game undefeated in league play and knew this match would make or break each other's seasons.
The B side match was played first as a curtain raiser to the A side game to be played under the lights. UC had only been in school a week, and, as a result, their B side's lack of experience was apparent from the beginning. The UD B side had three games under its belt and came out strong. Early tries by Mike Raymond and Matt Fyda set the tone. UD's strong forward pack had several long punishing runs. By the end of the game, UD had put up nearly 40 points while shutting out UC.
The A side game started in similar fashion for UC. Within 2 minutes, UC's lack of discipline at the breakdown cost them. UD took a 3-0 lead. Minutes later, some quick hands led to an easy try in the corner for Senior Jim Paszczykowski. A second try for Paszczykowski made it 13-0. Fullback Bob Schuster scored his first try of the season to make it 18-0. UC began to find their stride and after several phases inside the 22, they made it 18-5. The ensuing kickoff was misplayed by UC and an onrushing Jack Brennan scooped up the ball and went untouched for a try to make it 25-5. With the half winding down, a small break at midfield led to Paszczykowski's third try of the half. The 32-5 lead going into halftime made it look like it was going to be a one sided affair. After the teams played even for the first ten minutes of the second half, Senior Jake Van Asten beat his man and outran the other defenders to the corner to make it a 37-5 game. UD felt comfortable with the lead and made several substitutions to get some experience for younger players. UC was unwilling to give up though, and began to take control. In the last twenty minutes, they dominated and scored three tries to close the gap to 15 points. The final score was 37-22.
Unfortunately, the team had its second season ending injury in the past two weeks as Alex Barger went down with a broken collarbone and dislocated shoulder.
