UD took on Kent State Saturday in the second league match of the season for each team. UD entered the game 1-0 with a 30 point win over Xavier, while Kent St lost to Miami in game one 59-0. Last year's game was tightly contested, and the field conditions looked as if they would play into Kent State's hands. The narrow field combined with heavy rain made for a very sloppy game.
The first half began with UD controlling possession but failing to get on the scoreboard. Finally, after periods of sustained pressure, UD began to score. Four penalties by Flyhalf Dave Koehneman made it 12-0 before halftime. The failure to turn pressure into tries was highlighted during the break. Instead of making the smart plays, the team was forcing things and turning the ball over too much.
The second half saw UD take complete control. The offense exploded for five tries. Scorers included Koehneman, Bob Schuster, and Jack Brennan. Running downhill on Kent State's field is significant advantage, which was clearly apparent in the second half. While happy with the bonus point victory, the team realizes their is room for improvement.
The B side game went well for UD also. Several young players had strong performances. Freshman Dan Morrow had two tries to lead the team to victory. Unfortunately, outside center Damon Stachler who had been getting A side time this season fractured his fibula and will be out for the remainder of the fall season.
