The team played in the Rambler's 7s tournament in St. Louis on July 26th. Flags, Tex, Klug, Bob and Pa represented UD along with a few old high school friends. Despite a slow start, the team came in 2nd place overall. Senior winger Jim Paszczykowski was the team's MVP on the day.
Pool Play
In the first game, UD scored within 15 seconds, but a few defensive mishaps resulted in a 20-19 loss to Eureka. The second pool play game was against the KC Blues, a former Super League team. UD started strong and jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half. As KC settled down, the game started to change hands. UD ended up losing 19-17. The next game was against the St. Louis Ramblers. A strong performance led to a 28-12 victory. In the final pool play game, a 35 point first half led to a 47-5 victory over the Springfield Celts. In the five team pool, KC went 4-0, UD, Eureka, and Ramblers were 2-2. The Celts went 0-5. Based on point differential UD advanced to the semifinals.
Semifinals
UD took on the St. Louis Hornets. The Hornets jumped out to a 14-0 lead. UD settled down and Dave Koehneman scored a try right before the half to make it 14-7. A few minutes into the second half the Hornets were knocking on UD door. Several strong goal line tackles led to a turnover ball from Dave Klug. Bob Schuster picked it up and offloaded to Clark Taylor who ran 85 meters to tie the game up. In the final moments of the game the Hornets were attacking again. Several straight crashes forced UD to make some strong tackles on their bigger opponents. A knock gave possession back to UD for the last play of the game. Dave Klug took a quick tap penalty and passed it to Jim Paszczykowski who took it 80 meters to win the game.
Finals
In the finals, UD was seeking revenge against the KC Blues. A rough start saw KC's two Kenyan players score a pair of tries. KC then scored off the second half kickoff to go up 21-0. After finally passing it around a little bit, Dave Koehneman beat his man to score from 40 meters out to make it 21-5. After stealing the ball, UD got caught up in a maul from 22 meters out. A collective effort with almost all seven players getting in at one point resulted in a try closing the gap to 21 -12. UD stayed on the attack but ran out of time and finished in Second place.
Chicago
The team played in the Chicago Blaze Firehouse 7s tournament in Lemont, Illinois on Saturday. Players for the day were Quinn Macali, Dave Klug, Bert Schuster, Jim Paszczykowski, Steve Pangle, Adam Friedermann and Nick from Michigan State. Check out the report here.
Xavier
UD beat Xavier on Saturday afternoon. The 21-3 victory saw UD move to 3-0 in the Spring and 8-1 for the whole 2007-2008 season. Check out the match report. Overall, it was a strong season, marred only by one lightning shortened game and a disqualification from playoffs. Thirteen returning starters will be looking to lead next year's team to Nationals.
President's Cup
