Department of Residence Education Choosing to lead : Chosen to lead

Mission Statement

Within the Division of Student Development, the Department of Residence Education is an active participant in the intellectual and social development of the University of Dayton student. In order to support the university’s Vision of Excellence, the staff of residence education strives to foster individual and community development within our unique and intentional living and learning environments. Our goal is to establish a vibrant environment of connected but seamless learning outside of the classroom. We achieve this through four intentional strategies.

1) Educational and experiential activities play an integral role in challenging students to develop individual and group concepts of leadership, civility, community and faith.

2) Creating and capturing educational moments that are related to issues of accountability to self and community that is informed by student development theory. This occurs in order to help students make connections between their personal growth, their intellectual pursuits and their responsibility to the greater community.

3) Providing leadership opportunities for students to develop their individual identities, while appreciating difference in order to foster a sense of servant leadership. As educators, the residence education staff is purposeful in supporting and challenging students’ understandings of themselves and their community.

4) Encourage students to acknowledge, appreciate and affirm difference in an increasingly complex and diverse world as true distinctive graduates. Helping students live with each other and differences while working to understand the larger social justice issues.
