SCHOLARSHIPS

Two scholarships are also available through the Department of Religious Studies, the Martin Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Patrick J. Tonry, S.M., Scholarship for the Advancement of Women in Ministry. The deadline for application for these scholarships is the first day of class for each term. To obtain an application for either scholarship, please call the Department of Religious Studies at (937) 229-4321. Please note: these scholarships are not limited to full-time students.

MARTIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Established at the request of his family in honor of Thomas M. Martin, late chair of the Department of Religious Studies, this fund is a witness to the oneness of spirit that extends beyond the boundaries of time. This scholarship fund supports graduate students at the University of Dayton in the Department of Religious Studies through tuition assistance.

PATRICK J. TONRY, S.M., SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF WOMEN IN MINISTRY. The Patrick J. Tonry, S.M., Scholarship for the Advancement of Women in Ministry was established in 1996 to assist deserving women with tuition costs. Scholarships will be awarded to women without regard to race or religion, as determined in accordance with the procedures and practices established by the President and the Board of Trustees of the University of Dayton. Applicants must be enrolled full-time or part-time in courses at the graduate level in the Department of Religious Studies. Awards will be made to women who can demonstrate financial need and whose professional orientation is toward ministry in the Church.

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS

Graduate Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis to regular term, full-time students.  To be awarded an assistantship, an applicant must first be accepted into the M.A. program.  Assistantship positions are available in the Department of Religious Studies and Campus Ministry.  All application materials are due to the proper office (i.e., Department of Religious Studies or Campus Ministry Office) no later than March 1st.  Assistantships awarded in the spring are granted for the following academic year.  Presuming satisfactory performance, the assistantship may, upon review, be renewed for a second year.

Graduate Assistants in the Department of Religious Studies receive a modest stipend ($6,900 for 1998-1999 academic year) plus remission of tuition and fees for 18 semester credits per academic year.  Individual health care coverage is available upon request with a small fee deducted from each paycheck; family coverage is also available for a larger fee.  Recipients are expected to work 20 hours per week from August 16 through May 15.  Graduate Assistants in the Department of Religious Studies work as part of a unique self-directed team that works closely with the faculty by assisting them with their teaching, research, and academic-related service.

Graduate Assistants in Campus Ministry are considered as members of the larger campus ministry team.  A stipend and housing package, in addition to the remission of 18 semester credit hours of tuition and fees per academic year, are offered relative to the ministry appointment.  Each Graduate Assistant works 20 hours per week with a professional campus minister from August 8 through May 8.  For more information on Campus Ministry Assistantships, please contact Crystal C. Sullivan, in Campus Ministry (937-229-2574).

Those interested in applying for these positions should first contact the proper office and request an application form.  Please note: give the differences in the position responsibilities, the Department of Religious Studies and Campus Ministry utilize different applications.  Those interested in applying to both programs should submit two separate applications to the respective offices.

Graduate Assistantships may also be available through the International Marian Research Institute (937-229-4214; Fr. Johann Roten, S.M.), the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives (937-220-3126; Sr. Angela Ann Zukowski, M.H.S.H.), and the Department of Residential Programs (937-229-3321; John Govednik).  Interested applicants are encouraged to contact those offices for further information.
