Welcome Letter from Department Chair

Dear Undergraduate Student:

Welcome to the Department of Psychology at the University of Dayton. The faculty and staff of the Department, who will be introduced to you in this Handbook, look forward to a meaningful and rewarding association with you during your time as a psychology major. This Handbook was initially compiled by Drs. Eliot Butter and Judith Allik (both retired) with the intention of assisting psychology majors in making decisions regarding their undergraduate education and in planning for the future.

Contained in this Handbook are presentations of psychology as a discipline, a science, and a profession. The Handbook introduces you to our program and its policies. It addresses what it means to be a psychology major, the differences between the degree programs, and what courses are available and appropriate for various career or graduate school orientations. Finally, it discusses careers with a bachelors degree as well as how to apply to graduate school, the kinds of graduate degrees or careers you might consider, and many other topics that are relevant to the undergraduate psychology major.

Please take the time to read the Handbook, and use it as a reference while you are a student in our program. I know it will answer many of your questions and make your choice of psychology as a major more rewarding. It is ultimately your responsibility to make sure you are getting the most from your education and following your degree requirements. This Handbook should contribute to that effort.

As this Handbook is on the World Wide Web, it can be frequently updated. Please give any suggestions you have for improving its content to Dr. Carolyn Phelps (937.229.2618), the current Director of Undergraduate Psychology Programs.

Sincerely yours,

David W. Biers, Ph.D.
Chair, Department of Psychology
