The Psychology Department at the University of Dayton An article in the Monitor (February 1996), the monthly newsletter of the American Psychological Association, lists psychology as one of the top majors of college students today. The article points out that, according to data compiled by the Department of Education, psychology has seen an almost 50% growth rate over the last 5 years. The reasons for the significant increase are speculative, but what is important is that psychology is a very popular major. Approximately 70-75,000 students nationwide graduate with bachelors degrees in psychology every year. The University of Dayton has between 350 and 390 students majoring in psychology at any one time. The Department of Psychology is housed in St. Joseph Hall, a historic building reconstructed and modernized after a major fire. The main office of the department is located in Room 329 where students will be met by the departmental assistants (Telephone: 937.229.2713). Most departmental offices for the 16 full-time and approximately 10 part-time faculty members are also found on the third floor of St. Joseph. The locations of these offices are given in the section listing the faculty. Also located in Room 329, are the offices of the Department Chair, Dr. David Biers, and the Director of Undergraduate Programs, Dr. Carolyn Roecker Phelps. The Department research labs are also found in St. Joseph Hall with many of the labs comprising a suite of rooms in SJ333. You will find research rooms for faculty/student research in the areas of human factors, group dynamics, conflict management, pilot communication, social psychology, and language processing. Also found are clinical research rooms with one-way observation mirrors. Some faculty have research labs in different areas of St. Joseph Hall where research is conducted in the areas of perception, cognition, clinical psychology, and aesthetics. Research is also conducted off campus using local school age children and older populations. Also found in St. Joseph Hall are several open labs (003, and 125) housing computers with access to the world wide web and statistical packages which are available to the psychology major. |
