Program The joint Spring Meeting of the Ohio Section of the APS and the Southern Ohio Section of AAPT will be held Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, 2005, at the University of Dayton in Dayton, OH. The meeting is co-hosted by the Air Force Institute of Technology and the University of Dayton. The advance registration and banquet deadline is March 25, 2005, and the deadline for abstract submission is March 11, 2005. Contributed papers in any area of physics and physics teaching as well as papers on optics, photonics and related areas are welcome. The theme of the plenary sessions is "Nanophotonics." Four talks will highlight the exciting developments in the following areas: photonic crystal fibers; design, nano-fabrication and applications of 3D photonic lattices; polymer photonic devices; and quantum control in atom optics. The invited speakers are, respectively, Dr. Phil Russell (Univ. of Bath, UK), Dr. Shawn-Yu Lin (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), Dr. Jim Grote (Air Force Research Labs) and Dr. Dan Steck (Univ. of Oregon). Plenary sessions-abstracts. In addition, there will be a special public/plenary lecture Friday evening by Dr. David Reitze (Univ. of Florida) on the “Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory.” This talk will be a highlight of the celebration of the World Year of Physics 2005 at the Univ. of Dayton. An Optics Workshop will be offered on Saturday afternoon (April 9) for up to 30 high school teachers on a first-come, first served basis. The workshop is free and will include an OSA Optics Kit. A description of the workshop is on the website. Limited funds are available from the Ohio Section for travel and lodging to students who present oral or poster papers as first authors.
