INDETERMINISM / TEXTURALISM
Sample Project
This sample project for Indeterminism/Texturalism is not intended to be a complete set of directions on how to do the assignment. Its purpose is to
provide some information on how to approach the task. The sample project given is not necessarily complete, and there are many ways to arrive at
the end product. Do not use any of the materials or features found below.
- Begin by isolating vocal techniques you might use. In this case, we will use whispering, singing, shouting, and humming.
- Make a choice on how to approach "whispering". In this case, we will have each member of the chorus whisper their name, with a crescendo
and accelerando. The many voices will create a layer of sound, with the actual names being said obscured.
Provide a brief text explanation, and create a graphic to represent the idea.
- Make a choice on how to approach "singing". In this case, we will have the chorus sing a high pitch, with a slide down. There will
be a variety of indeterminate pitches, which may or may not eventually merge into one. The performers will determine the dynamic, and whether
or not there will be a decrescendo. Provide a brief text explanation, and create a graphic to represent the idea.
- Make a choice on how to approach "shouting". In this case, we will have each member of the chorus shout the syllables of their name staccato,
having them gradually place the syllables closer together. The randomness of this event will create a sound mass of short punctuations.
Provide a brief text explanation, and create a graphic to represent the idea.
- Make a choice on how to approach "humming". In this case, we will have the chorus hum a low note, with a decrescendo. The pitch may or may not
merge into one. Provide a brief text explanation, and create a graphic to represent the idea.
- String all the pieces together, adding timings.
