NEO-CLASSICISM

Sample Project

This sample project for Neo-classicism is not intended to be a complete set of directions on how to do the assignment. Its purpose is to provide some information on how to approach the task. The sample project given is not necessarily complete, and there are many ways to arrive at the end product. Do not use any of the materials or features found below.

  1. Begin by selecting a model. In this case, a phrase from a piano sonata by Mozart.
  2. Make a decision about how to change the pitch organization of the model. In this case, the Bb major will be kept in the top part, and the bottom part will become G Dorian.
  3. Make a metric alteration. In this case, the bottom part is shifted an eighth note to the right.
  4. Provide more rhythmic alterations. In this case, measures 3 and 7 have a beat subtracted, and there is a rhythmic change in measure 7.
  5. Provide some kind of surprise tonal shift. In this case, measures 3-4 are changed to a cadence on Ab (which has nothing to do with the other tonalities), and the ending is altered to lead into the cadence.
  6. Complete the project with tempo (given with a metronome marking), mood (given with descriptive words), dynamics, and articulations.
