EXPRESSIONISM

Sample Project

This sample project for Expressionism is not intended to be a complete set of directions on how to do the assignment. Its purpose is to provide some information on how to approach the task. The sample project given is not necessarily complete, and there are many ways to arrive at the end product. Do not use any of the materials or features found below.

  1. Begin by examining the cell. In this case, the interval vector will be [101100]. There are two basic cells which contain the intervals m2, m3, and M3 (the pitches are chosen randomly).
  2. These two cells can be projected to new pitches by transposing them (in this case, each was transposed three times, both up and down, a m2, m3, and M3). We now have 14 sets to use in this piece.
  3. Make choices on how to distribute the 14 sets (given in the form of a diagram).
    1.2.a1.d2.d1.a1.c 1.f
    2.c1.e2.e1.b2.b 2.f2.

  4. Distribute the pitches on a sheet of manuscript paper in approximate relation to occurance, being careful to explore many registers.
  5. Add appropriate rhythms, meters, and barlines.
  6. Complete the project with tempo (given with a metronome marking), mood (given with descriptive words), dynamics, and articulations.
