May 2015 
 Dr. Aparna Higgins was honored with
an alumni induction into Phi Beta Kappa by the Epsilon
of Indiana Chapter at the University of Notre Dame. Phi
Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest academic Honor
Society, founded at the College of William and Mary in
1776.
Aparna was the invited speaker at the
induction ceremony for the roughly eighty
undergraduate initiates of Phi Beta Kappa at the
University of Notre Dame on May 16, 2015.
 Dr. Shannon Driskell has been
promoted to Professor, and Dr. Lynne Yengulalp
has been tenured and promoted to Associate Professor,
effective Fall 2014.

Annual Integration Bee was held
on on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, in
conjunction with the
27th Annual Bro. Joseph Stander Symposium.
 The Math Club
elected new officers for the 20152016 academic year:

Matthew DeVilbiss
was elected president of the Ohio Zeta Chapter of Pi Mu
Epsilon.
 The team of
Matthew DeVilbiss, Tyler
Masthay and Adam Volk took
second place in the Leo Schneider Student
Team Competition at the
Spring Meeting of the Ohio Section of the MAA on Friday,
March 27, 2015.
Adam Volk won first
place in the student Sudoku competition.

November 2014 
 The Department of Mathematics is saddened by the
death of
Stanley J. Back, Emeritus
Professor, who died on November 22, 2014. He was 78
years old.
Stan graduated with a B.S. from the
University of Dayton in 1957 and then went on to earn an
M.S. in Statistics from Purdue University in 1959. Stan
taught at the University of Dayton for 4 decades.
Stan is survived by his children
Laura Christiansen and Brian Back, who remember him as a
generous, thoughtful and loving man and devoted
grandfather to Anja, Skylar and Elin Christiansen and
Anabel Back. Condolences can be sent to

August 2014 

Dr. Aparna Higgins
ended her long
service on the leadership team of Project NExT
(New Experiences in Teaching) in August 2014.
Her
association with this professional development program
for new faculty in the mathematical sciences culminated
in her serving as the Director of the program. The
MAA acknowledged her important contributions to the
mathematical community by passing a
resolution
honoring her for her work. In addition, Joe
Gallian, a longtime member of the Project NExT
leadership team himself, wrote a
tribute to Aparna in the MAA Focus (Vol. 34, No. 5,
October/November 2014).

assistant professor. Dr. Yengulalp has a PhD from the
University of Kansas, and she holds an MS and a BS in
mathematics from Miami University.

Megan is a double
