  • Dr. Wiebke Diestelkamp has been promoted to Professor, and Dr. Maher Qumsiyeh has been tenured and promoted to Associate Professor, effective Fall 2014.

  • Dr. Aparna Higgins was awarded the Mathematical Association of America Certificate of Meritorious Service at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore. This award is in recognition of Dr. Higgins' many leadership roles in the MAA, most notably her involvement with Project NExT.

  • Dr. Aparna Higgins will receive the Mathematical Association of America Certificate of Meritorious Service. The certificate will be presented at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Baltimore in January 2014.

  • Dr. Muhammad Usman has been granted tenure and promotion to Associate Professor, and Dr. Atif Abueida has been promoted to Professor, effective Fall 2013.
  • The following students have been inducted to the Dayton's Ohio Zeta Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon: Katherine Campbell, Christopher Cole, Michelle Connor, Brittney Dietz, Dan Espisito Rachel Lawless, Luke McCrate, Samantha Potocek, Claire Sonneborn and Elizabeth Yorka.
  • The 2013 recipient of the department's Award of Excellence in Support of Mathematics is Alyssa Lesko.
  • The recipient of the 2013 Brother Joseph W. Stander, S.M., Award of Excellence goes to Alan Rozanski. This award of excellence goes to a graduating senior in the teacher licensure program with a principal teaching field in mathematics.
  • The co-recipients of the 2013 Sophomore Award for Excellence in Mathematics are Rachel Lawless and Luke McCrate.
  • The recipient of the 2013 Lawrence A. Jehn Award for Excellence in Computer Science is Brandon Williams.
  • The recipient of the 2013 Father Thomas Schoen Award for Innovative Programming is Chester Lian.

  • The recipient of the 2012 Faculty Award for Excellence is Brian Bradley. Brian is a graduating mathematics major with a minor in computer science.
  • Lydia Kindelin is the 2012 recipient of the department's Award of Excellence in Support of Mathematics. Lydia is a junior mathematics major.

  • Dr. Art Busch has been granted tenure and promotion to Associate Professor, effective Fall 2012.

  • The team of Chester Lian and Brandon Williams took second place in the Leo Schneider Student Team Competition at the Spring Meeting of the Ohio Section of the MAA on Friday, April 13, 2012.
  • Dr. Wiebke Diestelkamp is President of the Ohio Section of the MAA. Her term will end in April 2013.
  • Dr. Aparna Higgins gave an invited address at the 2012 Spring Meeting of the Ohio Section of the MAA. She also presented an invited workshop at the Ohio NExT Workshop immediately preceding the meeting.

  • Dr. Ruihua Liu wins 2011 College of Arts & Sciences Award for Outstanding Scholarship.
  • Prof. Lester Steinlage wins 2011 College of Arts & Sciences Award for Outstanding Contributions by a Full-Time Non-Tenure Track Faculty.

  • Dr. Maher Qumsiyeh was elected to a one-year term as President of the Dayton Chapter of the American Statistical Association.
  • Dr. Pete Hovey was elected to a three-year term as Dayton Chapter Representative to the ASA.

  • The 2010 Brother Joseph W. Stander, S.M., Award of Excellence in Mathematics Education recipient is Erica Beebe. This award for excellence goes to a graduating senior in the teacher licensure program with a principal teaching field in mathematics.
  • Double majors, winning awards in their other majors include:
    • Courtney Castle, recipient of the Charles E. Kimble Research   Award for research excellence in psychology;
    • Kara Wurzelbacher, recipient of the Brother Louis J. Faerber, S.M., Award of Excellence to the Outstanding Student in Adolescence to Young Adult Education;
    • James Benze, co-recipient of the Chair’s Award for Excellence in Computer Science.

  • Dr. Wiebke Diestelkamp is President-Elect of the Ohio Section of the Mathematical Association of America. Her term will end in April 2012. At that time, she will become the President of the Section for one year.

  • Eric Stoiber was awarded the Maureen E. O'Rourke Marianist Award, which recognizes a graduating senior who exemplifies the Marianist Charism on campus.
  • Eric Krissek was a co-winner of the Patrick F. Palermo Honors Program Founders Fund Award, which recognizes outstanding honors thesis projects.

  • The results from the sixty-ninth annual William Lowell Putnam Competition (held in December 2009) are in: Four students, Joshua Cain, Joshua Craven, Charlie Suer and Yi Zhao, participated. Congratulations to Josh Cain, whose score of 21 ranked 543 out of 4036.
  • Danielle Bott and Jaye Samantha Flavin were inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honorary society.
  • Election results for Math Club officers for 2010-11: President Joshua Cain, PME President Josh Craven, Vice-President Megan Miller, Secretary Katie Esselstein, and Treasurer Courtney Castle.

  • The Math Club hosted the annual High School Math Competition for the 14th year. First place went to FHS (Fairfield High School), 2nd place to the Monstθrs (Walnut Hills High School), and 3rd place to J.A.M. (Walnut Hills High School).

  • Dr. Youssef Raffoul has been promoted to Professor, and Dr. Ruihua Liu has been tenured and promoted to Associate Professor (all effective August 16, 2010).

  • Senior Charlie Suer presented the poster, The Coloring Game on Certain Outerplanar Graphs, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Francisco. Charlie was presenting results obtained during his REU experience at Linfield University last summer.
August 2009
  • Dr. Lynne Yengulalp joins the department as an assistant professor. Dr. Yengulalp has a PhD from the University of Kansas, and she holds an MS and a BS in mathematics from Miami University.

  • The recipient of the 2009 Faculty Award for Excellence is Megan Johns. Megan is a double major: mathematics and biology. She is also a co-winner of the P. K. Bajpai Undergraduate Research Award which goes to the undergraduate student who best represents the spirit of undergraduate research in biology.

  • The recipient of the 2009 Pi Mu Epsilon Award is Joshua Cain. This is an award for excellence among second year students in mathematics.

  • The 2009 Brother Joseph W. Stander, S.M., Award of Excellence in Mathematics Education recipient is Ella Stone. This award for excellence goes to a graduating senior in the teacher licensure program with a principal teaching field in mathematics.

  • Danielle Carleton is co-winner of the Dr. E. B. O’Leary Award of Excellence. Danielle was a double major: mathematics and economics. This award goes to the outstanding senior majoring in economics.

  • Joshua Cain, Erik Krissek, Megan Miller, Joonwoo Park and Yi Zhao were inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honorary society.

February 2009
  • Dr. Aparna Higgins has been named Director of Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching), a professional development program of the Mathematical Association of America for new and recent PhDs in the mathematical sciences. her five-year term begins in August 2010. Read more here.

  • Mathematics major Megan Miller wins a National Defense Education Program SMART full-tuition scholarship, which includes a paid internship and postgraduation employment with the U.S. Air Force.
