| The
Department of Mathematics at the University of Dayton has student
chapters of two national mathematics organizations, the Mathematical
Association of America (MAA) and Pi Mu Epsilon. These organizations
attempt to educate students about math outside their typical coursework
and to give them an understanding of possible careers in math and
math-related fields.
UD's
MAA student chapter, known as the Math Club, welcomes students from all
disciplines who have an interest in mathematics. Pi Mu Epsilon is an
honorary mathematics organization which inducts new members each spring
based on academic performance.
The
two organizations share a structure of student officers and hold joint
monthly meetings and social events. At monthly meetings, speakers are
invited to talk to the group. In the past, these speakers have included
faculty and students from both on- and off-campus. They have spoken
about current research, graduate school opportunities, and career
possibilities in mathematics. In addition, students are made aware of
departmental activities as well as regional conferences and contests in
mathematics. Any interested students are encouraged to attend.
