The Libertarian Party is the only party working to eliminate the federal income tax and FICA taxes and replace them with NOTHING. No flat tax, no national sales tax, NOTHING. The federal government can be funded with low tariffs and excise taxes, and nothing else. The federal budget is about $1.9 TRLLION per year now. Libertarians also work at the state level to eliminate state income tax and at the local level to stop and eliminate wasteful spending.
How can the federal government
save money?
Start by bringing all of our troops home. The federal government has no Constitutional
authority to mess in foreign affairs, and it's ridiculous of us to pay for troops
in countries that can support themselves.
Next, get the federal government out of education completely. Ever since the federal government got involved, schools have deteriorated. The word "education" appears nowhere in the Constitution.
End subsidies. It's wrong to take money from hardworking people to give it away to whomever contributed the most to the politicians' campaigns. The words "theft" and "slavery" come to mind. A common misconception by liberals and socialists is that subsidies are a part of capitalism. This is wrong. Subsidies go against everything a truly free market stands for.
Get the government out of welfare. Most of the money spent on welfare goes to administrative costs. Bureaucrats have no reason to encourage people to get off of welfare, because they need to keep their job! The current welfare state punishes productivity and encourages fathers to leave the families they have created. Private charities are much better equipped to help the poor and set them in the right direction.
Harry Browne, the 1996 and 2000 Libertarian candidate for president, suggested we could tear down the IRS building like Germans tore down the Berlin Wall. The federal government went until 1913 without an income tax except during the Civil War. When Congress introduced the idea of an income tax to the Supreme Court, they said it was unconstitutional. That is why they had to make an amendment to the Constitution, since that is the only way to get around the Supreme Court.
Libertarians believe YOU are the one who should decide how to spend your money. The government should be limited in its powers to protecting our liberty and protecting us from a foreign invasion. It should not just do whatever makes the politicians feel good.
