Constitution for the University of Dayton College Libertarians
Preamble
We the People of the College Libertarians, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the University of Dayton College Libertarians.
Article 1 - Name of Organization
The name of this organization shall be College Libertarians
Article 2 - Affiliation
College Libertarians will be affiliated with the National Libertarian Party, although Student members will not be required to join the national party.
Article 3 - Purpose
The purpose of the College Libertarians is to introduce the Libertarian philosophy into the marketplace of ideas by encouraging free- market solutions to economic and social problems. We support any and all efforts to diminish the role of government in solving political, economic, and/or social problems. We will also strive to support and promote the principles and candidates of the Libertarian Party. Our task as Libertarians is to take a deep breath, hold our noses, and engage in politics.
Article 4 - Membership
Section 1: Voting Members
A voting member is any student who supports the purpose of the College Libertarians,
has paid his/her dues, and has registered his/her membership with the secretary.
Only voting members are permitted to hold office, with the exception of the
Faculty Advisor.
Section 2: Associate Members
An associate member is any faculty member, staff, University alumnus, or community
member who supports the purpose of the College Libertarians and has registered
his/her membership with the secretary.
Section 3: Payment of Dues
Dues shall be established at the first official meeting. They must be paid before
members will be permitted to vote. Failure to pay dues can result in termination
of membership in this organization.
Section 4: Membership Termination
A voting member will be terminated if/when one of the following conditions have
been met: the member notifies the secretary that he/she is no longer a member;
dues are more than 60 days in arrears; or the member has been expelled by a
2/3 vote of the paying members.
Section 5: Non- Hazing Policy
College Libertarians will not require any initiation ceremony of any kind, and
will not resort to hazing or any type of degrading mental or physical engagement
as a requirement for membership.
Article 5 - Officers
Section 1: President
The president will preside over meetings, appoint members to special committees,
and perform other duties as delegated by the Executive Committee or membership
Section 2: Vice President
The Vice- President will perform the duties of the president in his/her absence
and will perform other duties as delegated by the Executive Committee or membership
Section 3: Secretary of State
The Secretary of State will keep minutes of each meeting, all club records and
official correspondence, and perform other duties as delegated by the Executive
Committee or membership.
Section 4: Treasurer
The Treasurer will keep club funds and financial records, make disbursements
as directed by the Executive Committee, and perform other duties as delegated
by the Executive Committee or membership.
Section 5: Executive Committee
The Executive Committee will consist of the President, Vice- President, Secretary
of State, and Treasurer.
Section 6: Elections and Vacancies
Officers will be elected at the end of each school year, and will serve a term
of one year, commencing upon their election. Vacancies will be filled by special
election at the next meeting, following a vacancy.
Article 6 - Meetings
Section 1: Regular Meetings
Regular Meetings will be held once per week, with the specific day determined
by the voting members.
Section 2: Special Meetings
Special meetings may be called by the Executive Committee or by petition of
one- third of the membership. The secretary will notify all members if there
is a special meeting.
Section 3: Summer Meetings
Summer meetings may be held at the discretion of the members who are present
during the summer. The constitution may not be amended, nor can by- laws be
added, during a summer meeting.
Article 7- Amendments and Bylaws
This constitution may be amended by a two- thirds majority vote at any regular meeting. Bylaws may be added to this constitution by a two- thirds majority vote at any regular meeting.
