WHY SHOULD I STUDY MARTIAL ARTS IN THIS CLUB?
We are a Taekwon-Do Club focused on the UD experience
Your life at UD and
beyond will be enhanced by study in our club.
The International
Taekwon-Do Club is a UD Recreational Sports Club. You’ll workout with UD students and alumni, and learn the Korean
martial art of Taekwon-Do focused on the UD environment. This will help you get or stay in shape,
defend yourself, gain confidence, and have fun!
Our goals are simple:
Ø
Help you defend
yourself;
Ø
Combine physical skills
with mental discipline to enhance your life;
Ø
Teach skills that you
will use far beyond any English, History, or Math class to help you succeed in
life.
How can our Club
possibly do that? You will learn:
Ø
To combine kicks and
punches with releases and “common sense” to avoid danger and to be confident
in any situation;
Ø
Concentration and Focus, key mental traits of martial
artists, and how to apply these skills to any aspect of your life;
Ø
The rhythm of how YOU
learn in a no-pressure atmosphere; knowing yourself is a key to
future success.
As a student progresses in
the club, other skills develop:
Ø
concentration
skills as applied to study or meditation;
Ø
understanding
of internal motivation;
Ø
teaching
as applied to public speaking skills;
Ø
perseverance
and encouragement as applied to positive attitude in life;
Ø
leadership
as applied to management in professional life.
A typical class lasts about one hour. We stretch out and warm up for about 10-15
minutes. Then we begin learning or
reviewing techniques such as kicks, punches, and blocks. We’ll then use these in drills with heavy
bags, pads, or other equipment you can really hit hard! We’ll have a self-defense or sparring time
where you get to see how to apply the techniques. We try to rehearse situations where Taekwon-Do could help
you. No experience is needed, just
initiative and interest to learn.
Instructors are typically black belts. (Non-black belts also teach to enhance
their skills and help build leadership qualities.) Our black belts do more than just give
martial arts advice. Most are alumni or
are senior professionals in industry, and can provide you with advice far
beyond how to do a block or kick.
We are a Taekwon-Do Club
focused on the UD experience.
