Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE)

History of IET

The Industrial Engineering Technology program was one of the first to be offered by UD in 1950. It has always been built on a strong foundation of the application of industrial engineering principles to production operations management, quality management, and in a wide variety of service industries. The BSET degree in this major was instituted in 1964. Leadership of the program has been provided by Professors James McGraw, Raymond Puckett, James Courtright, and Charlie Edmonson. The IET program began in St. Joseph Hall and moved to the Kettering Laboratories Building in the early 1970’s.

The IET program provides two of the most popular minors in Engineering Technology; one in the general principles of IET and the other in Quality Assurance. Students are attracted to these areas because of their strong contribution to the development of skills that can be applied to the management of technical operations, a very desirable career path for Engineering Technology graduates. The program is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC of ABET).

The organization is involved in attending senior chapter meetings, holding monthly chapter meetings on campus, having guest speakers from industry and business, taking field trips through local industries and businesses, and fund raising activities.

The purpose of IIE is to get students acclimated to the industrial and business world and to make contact with representatives from the same. Each member receives a monthly magazine which contains outstanding IIE articles and computer programs.
