Guidelines for
New Hire Salary Setting Normal Hiring Pay
Range Guidelines Non-exempt positions:
(Administrative
support; technical) The "normal" hiring range for administrative support and technical positions is between minimum and the "one-third" level. This assumes relative inexperience either in the field of expertise or with the University. Exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be hired above the bottom third up to the midpoint of the pay range after consultation and approval of Human Resources. We would not usually expect an outside hire to come in above the UD Target (midpoint of the pay range). Base salaries above the UD Target are considered “premium” pay and are appropriate for contributors who are knowledgeable about UD as well as their area of work and are performing well above expectations for a fully competent employee. Offers exceeding this should only occur in rare circumstances and must be authorized in advance by the Office of Human Resources. Exempt
Positions: (Grade
A – D) Pay grades for these
employees are “wider” than for the non-exempt.
As such, each grade accommodates a wider range of position types and
levels. Therefore, new hire salary
decisions should be based on internal equity with similar positions and, to the
extent known, the market value of the job.
HR must concur with any new hire salary above the “two-thirds” point
in the range. Note:
After
April 1 of each year, hiring pay ranges should be based on the next fiscal year
(July 1) pay structure. Individuals
hired between April 1st and July 1st are not normally
eligible for the annual pay increase on July 1st of their year of hire.
