Larrel Walters
Larrell Walters began
learning the game of hockey in the early 1970’s,
but the learning became a love for the game
while attending Bowling Green State University.
From 1974 through 1978, he took classes from
Bowling Green varsity Coach Ron Mason, as well
as BGSU club team coach Shawn Walsh, both of
whom would go on to win NCAA National
Championships at Michigan State University and
the University of Maine respectively. While he
admits he wasn’t a great player, Larrell did get
the opportunity to play spring hockey and learn
some of the intricacies of the game alongside
Bowling Green greats like Ken Morrow, Mike Liut,
Mark Wells, and John Markell.
Upon leaving BGSU, while working for Goodyear
Aerospace in Akron, OH, Larrell played men’s
league hockey and coached Bantam and Peewee
travel teams. In 1987 Larrell moved to Troy,
Ohio where he continued to coach and play until
1992. In 2002 Larrell once again started
coached and began actively pursuing his USA
Hockey Coaching Certification. This spring
Larrell completed his coursework for his USA
Hockey Level 5 Master’s Certification program
with instructors including nine NHL coaches.
He is currently working on his Master’s Thesis,
which is due to USA Hockey this December.
Currently Larrell is the Director, Technology
Partnerships for the University of Dayton.
During his non-hockey career Larrell has spent
