Waste Management

Our Contractor, Waste Management Inc. provides comprehensive collection and disposal services to the University of Dayton. All recyclable items placed in the dumpsters labeled COMMINGLE ITEMS. Commingled materials are removed from campus and sorted at Waste Management's recycling facility.

All non-recyclable waste items removed from the offices, classrooms or food services areas are to be deposited in TRASH receptacles or dumpsters.

Our Recycling Education and Promotion program is showing results. Commingle materials removed from campus increased from 263 tons in 2005 to 319 tons in 2006. Over 419 tons of commingle materials were removed in 2007. This represents a 59% increase from 2005 to 2007. Any increase in commingle tonnage removed from the waste stream must be offset by a decrease in waste going to the landfill. From 2005 to 2007 we reduced the total waste sent to the landfill by 212 tons.

In an effort to increase both the visibility and the usability of the recycling system, 45 new recycling receptacles (representing a 35% increase in available containers) are being placed throughout central campus grounds, greatly improving upon the system, making it more "user-friendly" and visible.
