Carl I. Michaelis Scholarship Fund

The Carl I. Michaelis Scholarship Fund was established in the fall of 2001 from a 1.7 million dollar bequest from the estate of the late Dr.Carl I. Michaelis, Professor Emeritus of organic chemistry. Carl originally joined the department in 1954 and during his time at UD, he received recognition as Professor of the Year in 1963 and was runner-up for the Alumni Outstanding Faculty Award that year.

Carl was nominated for Distinguished Service Professor in 1987 and was appointed Professor Emeritus in 1988 following his retirement. In addition to carrying a full teaching workload, Carl advised hundreds of premedical and predental students at UD over the 36 year span of his career. He was faculty adviser to the UD student affiliate of the American Chemical Society for 33 years, and the group gained national recognition four times during his tenure.

Michaelis Scholarships are  awarded annually to qualifying junior and senior chemistry and biochemistry majors on a competitive basis and are also awarded automatically to qualified Katchman Scholars. Typical Michaelis Awards are substantial: $5000 per year for each of the third and fourth years at UD. For details and more information on the both the Michaelis and the Katchman Scholarship Programs, contact the Chemistry Department office.

Bernard J. Katchman Scholarship Fund

Bernard J. Katchman joined the Chemistry Department of the University of Dayton in 1967.  As a result of his prior experience as the Director of Biochemical Research for a local hospital, he was acutely aware of the need for clinical scientists with strong backgrounds in Chemistry.  He continually counseled his undergraduate students on the fundamental importance of Chemistry in all of the health science professions. A memorial fund was established by members of the academic, medical, and scientific communities upon Dr. Katchman's death in 1970.  The Bernard J. Katchman Memorial Fund currently provides scholarship support of about $1250 over the first two years of enrollment to outstanding entering 1st year students majoring in Chemistry or Biochemistry at UD.  Starting with the fall term of 2002, entering Katchman Scholars are also automatically awarded a Michaelis Scholarship at the $5000 per year level for their third and fourth years of enrollment. For more information on these scholarship programs, contact the Chemistry Department office.
