Couples Counseling
The University of Dayton
offers couples counseling for UD students.
It is only necessary for one
person in the relationship to be a UD student.
Couples counseling is a way for
a couple to address problems in their relationship that they have not been
able to address themselves.
- Your counselor will begin by listening to what each of you view as the problem(s)in the relationship.
- Then the three of you (you, your partner, and your counselor) will agree upon goals for counseling.
- The counseling process includes working through various problems (financial, values, roles) as well as working on
ways in which you communicate.
- Your counselor will not make assumptions concerning whether you should continue
the relationship or terminate the relationship. Those decisions are yours
to determine.
- In relationships where physical violence is present, couples counseling is
not usually appropriate. The counselor will discuss with you the importance
of ceasing ALL physical violence in order for the relationship to improve.
If the violence is not stopped, the counselor will recommend appropriate
treatment for the violence before couples counseling can be resumed.
