TOPIC:
Phyllis Trible re-reads Gen.2-3. Feminist Liberation Theology.
Assignment: about a page of response to each of these two questions.
(You need not separate the pages; just put your name at the top of the first page.)

BACKGROUND:
You have read Gen. 1-3. Gen.2-3 is the account by the "Jahwist" written about 900 B.C. (You will recall that Gen.1 was probably not written until ca. 400 B.C.)  Trible's Protestant feminist theology fits with John Paul II's Catholic call for social justice. Both think that changing human consciousness is an important part of cultural development.  Because there are still those who use Gen. 2-3 to subordinate women to men, Trible wants to help change the effect that biblical interpretation can have on the position of women in life.

QUESTIONS:

1.   Describe at least three arguments or analyses made by Trible concerning

   a)  how Genesis has been used to say women should be subordinate to men, and

   b)  how scripture can be read differently if you pay attention to details.

(This questions asks you  a) to describe briefly the anti-feminist interpretations from the past, and  b) Trible’s pro-feminist interpretation offered in response. Please number each of the three points to make it easy for me to follow what you are saying. [Note that in her larger writings she indicates that the goal of feminist theology is equality among men and women, not superiority of either over the other.])

2.   Give your own evaluation of Trible's analysis. Make an intelligent comment, criticism, evaluation. Indicate whether you think that "patriarchialism" is still a real problem in life and in religion.
