The Purpose of Alpha Phi Omega is to assemble college students in a national service fraternity in the fellowship principles derived from Scout Oath and Law of the Boy Scouts of America; to develop leadership, to promote friendship and to provide service to humanity.

During mid-May, Alpha Gamma Xi will send a group of about 15 students from the University of Dayton community to the town of Little Eagle. Little Eagle is located in Standing Rock Indian Reservation, which is a large Lakota and Dakota reservation that spans parts of North and South Dakota. This service-immersion breakout aims to incorporate the help of the UD students in achieving goals that were conceived by the people of Little Eagle, rather than attempting to bring outsider solutions to the issues. In fact, the breakout was largely inspired by the dream of a Hunkpapa Lakota youth named Lakota Rose Madison, who had a vision for "safe houses," or community centers of cultural exchange for the youth. Lakota Rose's dream of building these Peace Places continues to be one of the long-term goals that the breakout will help to achieve.
The central focus of the breakout is service. Every year, the UD students and the Circle of Light Initiative stay in the gym in Little Eagle, which is closed much of the time due to disrepair and lack of funds. However, during the length of the breakout, the gym is kept open to give the children a safe, positive environment in which to spend their afternoons playing games and doing art projects. One of the projects that will be continued this year will be collecting donations, such as much-needed toiletries, clothing, and books, to drive out to the reservation. The students will also provide food for and participate in a community-building meal. Projects in the past that will be continued if possible are physical construction of the Lakota Rose Madison Peace Place in Little Eagle and further rebuilding of the library at Sitting Bull Elementary.
Those that attend the breakout will have opportunities to do service, learn about the Lakota culture, build lasting relationships, and have fun making a difference!
