The Annual Humanities Base
Student Writing Contest

The Alumni Chair in the Humanities recognizes three students each year for their
excellence in writing. Each student winner will receive a $150 UD Bookstore gift
certificate to be used for either trade or textbooks.
Topic: Essays should address one or more of the
four Humanities Base
themes or focus on one of the
Humanities Base
texts.
Criteria:
•A discussion of a theme or themes (the thematic focus
should be easily identified)
•A discussion or critique of one of the Humanities Base
readings
•Clear and convincing prose
•Good use of evidence and reasoning skills
•Persuasive or entertaining writing with a clear sense of
voice
Submission: Essays may be submitted throughout the
academic year.
The deadline for 2009-10 is Friday, April 23,
by 3:00 PM.
To submit an essay, students should bring/mail a clean hard copy of the essay to
HM 466, campus zip +1549. Only hard copies are accepted. Faculty members may
also submit essays that are especially worthy of consideration on behalf of
students. Essays should be on standard 8˝ x 11 paper, with appropriate margins
and font. On a separate page, include the author’s name, campus address, e-mail
address, and the name of the instructor and class for which the paper was
written.
Papers will be judged by a panel of Humanities Base faculty.
