The University of Dayton Respirator Program

To be enrolled in the University of Dayton respirator program, you must complete the three mandatory components per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134:

  1. Receive medical clearance to wear a tight fitting respirator.
  2. Complete the respirator training.
  3. Pass a fit test (using smoke) with the tight fitting respirator(s) the individual will be wearing.

Medical Clearance:

The student or employee needing to wear a respirator must complete the University of Dayton medical questionnaire, and submit to a UD approved PLHCP (physician) for a medical evaluation.  Based on the information provided on the questionnaire, the physician will either grant medical clearance, or require a further physical examination of the student or employee.  Please contact Environmental Health & Safety/Risk Management at 937-229-4503 (x94503) to obtain the medical questionnaire.

Respirator Training:

EHS/RM can provide classroom training, or online training is available.  Please contact Environmental Health & Safety/Risk Management at 937-229-4503 (x94503) to either schedule a class, or take the online training.

Fit test for respirator:

Once a student or employee has obtained medical clearance and has completed the training, he or she must pass a fit test in the respirator that will be worn by the individual.  The fit test is scheduled through Environmental Health & Safety/Risk Management at 937-229-4503 (x94503).  The fit test utilizes a smoke to ensure proper fit of the respirator.
