Universal Waste

The universal waste regulations streamline collection requirements for certain hazardous wastes in the following categories: batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment (e.g., thermostats) and lamps (e.g., fluorescent bulbs). The rule is designed to reduce hazardous waste in the municipal solid waste stream by making it easier for universal waste handlers to collect these items and send them for recycling or proper disposal.

The University of Dayton recycles universal waste, including the following:

  • Batteries-

Lead-containing, Nickel-containing, Lithium or Lithium Ion, etc.

  • Pesticides-

Stocks of cancelled, suspended, or unused pesticides (not pesticides that are wastes).

  • Mercury-Containing Equipment-

Thermostats, thermometers, barometers, free mercury, or any other piece of equipment or container with free mercury.

  • Lamps-

Fluorescent light bulbs, High Intensity Discharge, Metal halide, Mercury Vapor, etc.

For collection of these items, please contact Environmental Health & Safety/Risk Management at x94503, or email Katherine.Cleaver@notes.udayton.edu.
