Hazardous Waste

For collection of Hazardous Waste, please contact Environmental Health & Safety/Risk Management at 229-4503 or email Katherine.Cleaver@notes.udayton.edu

(University of Dayton waste collection request form download)

Please complete the waste collection request form and return to EHS/RM via email, fax (x94395) or zip +2905 for proper disposal of your waste.

Identifying Waste

If a chemical or product has no further use because it has expired, become contaminated, or does not have any useful purposes, it should be turned in to Environmental Health & Safety/Risk Management for proper disposal.

According to the EPA, hazardous waste is either a listed waste (40 CFR 261) or posses any one of four characteristics.  The EPA has designated four physical properties for identifying waste if not a listed hazardous waste:

n  Ignitability (<140ºF)

n  Corrosivity (pH <2 or >12.5)

n  Reactivity (is it reactive)

n  Toxicity Characteristic (Fails TCLP test)

If the waste generated has any constituent that falls into one or more of these categories, then the waste is hazardous and must be disposed of through EHS/RM.

Collection

All wastes must be collected in suitable (compatible with hazard of chemical) sealed containers which must remain closed except while adding contents.

If the integrity of the original container is not adequate (evidence or cracks, bulge, or material not compatible with its content) the container and contents must be placed in another container and prepared for disposal.  When setting up for waste which will be generated, choose a suitable container and place a “Hazardous Waste” label on the container with the contents and the accumulation date.

Storage

The waste container should be placed in secondary containment in a designated place for waste.  Store waste in a designated area away from normal operations and to prevent unauthorized access.  The waste bottles should be stored away from sinks and floor drains.  Do not completely fill waste bottles; leave several inches of space at the top of each waste container. All waste containers should be tightly sealed.

Drain Disposal

The following materials are prohibited from drain disposal:

·         Flammable or Ignitable (Flashpoint of <140˚F)

·         Corrosive (pH lower than 6.0 or greater than 12.0)

·         Reactive (forms potentially explosive mixtures when mixed with water)

·         Toxic or malodorous (bad odor) wastes

·         Oils, fats or grease in excess of 100 mg/L

·         Radioactive waste (unless this is a designated “Hotsink”- per Radiation Safety Officer x94503)

·         Infectious or Biohazardous waste

·         Polyclorinated Biphenyls

·         Solutions containing heavy metals

·         Poisons

·         Organic Solvents

·         Waste paint and paint thinner

The student or employee of the University of Dayton producing the waste has an obligation to consider the ultimate fate of the materials resulting in his or her work.  Please practice continuous and basic respect for human health and the environment.
