Introduction to Mariology

Designed for students who are new to the program or who simply have an interest in Mariology, this course explores the basic Marian issues within the framework of contemporary theology and emphasizes the major developments in Mariology since Vatican II.

Methods in Theology

This course deals with various methods used in the study of contemporary theology.  It points out their specific focus and philosophical foundation, as well as advantages and limitations.  Their application to research in Mariology will be examined.

MARY IN MEDIEVAL PERIOD

This course
studies the development of Marian doctrine and devotion in the Western Church from the seventh century to the Renaissance.  It will attempt to situate Marian Studies of the Middle Ages within the context of religious mentalities and culture.

MARY IN MODERN PERIOD

This course studies the history of Mariology from pre-Reformation period to the twentieth century.  The principal Marian doctrines, devotions, and authors will be discussed, with attention to their ecclesial, theological, and social contexts.

MARY AND THE NEW TESTAMENT

This course studies the principal New Testament texts with reference to Mary as Mother of the Redeemer, as figure of the Church, and with reference to her role in the history of salvation.

CHRIST IN PATRISTIC PERIOD

This course traces the origins of the theological reflection on Christ.  It will highlight the formation of dogmatic Christology from Apollinaris of Laodicea and the Cappadocian Fathers to the Christological definition of Chalcedon.

CHRISTOLOGY (SOTERIOLOGY)

This course studies the classical themes of Christology in both anthropological and soteriological perspectives.  Special attention is given to the uniqueness and universality of Jesus Christ in the context of world religions.

MARIAN DOCTRINE
Father Vincent Wiseman, O.P.
This course presents the biblical, historical, systematic, and social study of the principal Marian doctrines, such as the Divine Maternity, Virginity, Immaculate Conception, and Assumption.  It will also explore the theological and spiritual aspects of Mary's spiritual maternity, intercession, and mediation.

MARY IN THEOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY

This course presents an anthropological approach to the understanding of Mary and examines its challenges and limitations in light of a theological study of the human person.  The first week deals with general themes of contemporary theological anthropology.  The second week assesses Mary's place in theological anthropology.
