DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
This country makes up the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, while Haiti makes up the western end of the island. The Dominican Republic is in the West Indies island group, only 575 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. This country is a land of fertile valleys and green mountains. Christopher Columbus landed on Hispaniola in 1492, and some historians believe he is buried on this island in the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. During much of Dominican Republic's history, dictators and other countries have ruled. It is now a government with a President, a Cabinet, a Senate, and the Chamber of Deputies. Mostly Spanish is spoken and other ways of life brought to their land from Spain are observed. African influence, which came to the country by way of Haiti, is very strong. Dominican Republic began printing stamps in 1885, and the stamps of Mary, the Nativity and Holy Family began in 1942.
