The following listing represents a selection of Marian shrines in Italy, some among the more important ones. There are hundreds of Marian shrines in Italy, many of them of local importance. Some miraculous or venerated images of Our Lady listed here are located in monasteries, basilicas, and parish churches not of specifically Marian character.   1. Rome and the Region of Lazio

    The Basilica of St. Mary Major (Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore)

    The Immaculate Conception Column
    Looking up from the bottom of the Spanish Steps, the column is located at the top of the steps, between the little wall, and the church of the Propaganda Fide College. The statue of the Immaculate Conception stands atop the eighty-foot-high column.

    Mater Admirabile
    This painting is a fresco, the location of which has become a shrine.
    Location: Convent of the Madams of the Sacred Heart.
    Visitors must climb the stairs beside the Trinita dei Monti, ring the doorbell at the entrance and say, “Sister, may I visit Mater Admirabilis?” The Sister will then give permission, and direct the devotee to the second floor corridor, reached by several flights of stairs.

    Madonna di Montenero, The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace (Madonna delle Grazie di Montenero, Livorno)
    Tuscany, Italy
    About six miles southeast of Florence, a mile from the water and southeast of the small sea port of Livorno.

    Located on a hill-side, the sanctuary looks over the sea.
    The chapel is just beyond the Carriage Square with the fresco covering the side of the sanctuary, depicting the shepherd who, in 1345 found the image of the Madonna.
