Be praised, Mother of God, by beautiful chrysanthemums. (Mieczyslaw Gogacz, Litania kwiatow do Matki Bozej) The chrysanthemum is the flower that Polish people traditionally take to the cemeteries on All Saints’ Day to remember their departed loved ones. The artist presents a unique picture of Mary, seated on a throne with her arms resting on the arms of the chair. The Madonna is regally dressed and wears the insignia of authority around her neck and a large crown upon her head. The Child, in a full robe and flowing cape, presents a bouquet of chrysanthemums to His Holy Mother. |
