Beautiful Pilgrim, without jewelry, accompanied only by the animals and the Holy Child,
wandering on Polish roads en route to Jasna Gora. . . . Pray for us.

(Fr. Jan Twardowski, Litania polska)

Jasna Gora is the site of the most famous shrine in Poland, home of the Black Madonna, Our Lady of Czestochowa. The dress of the Holy Icon is often adorned with precious jewels donated by believers who have been healed through Our Lady’s intercession. In the painting of the Beautiful Pilgrim, the artist shows the Madonna as originally painted, without her votive jewels. The Madonna in her simple garb stands in solidarity with the common people.
