Updates

Father James H. Phalan, CSC, Vice-President of the Mariological Society of America sent the following information:

Dear Friends,

In about a month the Catholic Church will celebrate a wonderful event that will bring together more than one million young people from every continent to deepen and share their faith and hope in Our Lord Jesus.  World Youth Day, Madrid, August 16-21, will be a great moment to proclaim the Gospel, the Good News. to the whole world.

To prepare for this event, since the beginning of May thousands of people across the globe have been joined in a campaign to pray for the gifts of Holy Spirit.  This initiative, FIRM IN THE FAITH WITH MARY, invites people everywhere to PRAY THE ROSARY ON SATURDAYS for WORLD YOUTH DAY.  It is a simple but powerful act, done in deep faith.

Please visit www.firminfaith.org.  Through this website you will find many fine resources to help you pray and to grow closer to Christ with Mary.

FIRM IN THE FAITH WITH MARY has full approval and support of the World Youth Day Organization in Madrid and the Pontifical Councils for the Laity and for Social Communications of the Vatican.

Many people in many countries are united in prayer.  PLEASE HELP STRENGTHEN THIS EFFORT by inviting more people of all ages to pray on the Saturdays that remain.  Please share this message verbally, by email, in your parishes: however you can.

Please use social networks and other media.  You can post something like: World Youth Day, Madrid, August 16-21 is almost here: a great event for celebrating our Faith in Christ!  Pray the Rosary each Saturday for it: see FIRM IN THE FAITH WITH MARY: www.firminfaith.org

Thank you and God bless you for your support.

Rev. James Phalan, CSC
Coordinator, FIRM IN THE FAITH WITH MARY

Mary in Books, Films, and Music

New Marian website

Mary Hansen would like to inform everyone of the launch of her new website on the topic of Marian shrines in Mexico.  It is called Madonnas of Mexico; and its web address is madonnasofmexico.com.  She and her husband, Oskar, have been to Mexico many times and have visited these shrines.  Each month a different Mexican shrine or church will be featured on the site.  Mary Hansen, a former teacher, is now a freelance writer who has written articles for many Catholic periodicals.  She has an M.Div. degree in theology and writes from North Bay, Ontario, Canada.

The first shrine-of-the-month to be featured is that of Our Lady of Patrocinio in Guadalupe, Zacatecas.  A painting of Our Lady of Patrocinio is featured on the main page of her website.

This project started with research done at The Marian Library by Mary and Oscar in 2003.  Mary has offered to provide copies of her Marian articles and also of a booklet she has written on Marian shrines for our holdings. We are grateful for these donations and look forward to receiving these materials.

From the Marian Treasure Chest

Chaminade Cause by Brother John M. Samaha, S.M.

Blessings for the Chaminade Year for the entire Marianist Family!  Our Chaminade Year honors the 250th anniversary of the birth of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, April 8, 1761.  Pray with us for his canonization.  The needed miracle is now being examined by Vatican officials.  See the excerpts below taken from a Zenit article published June 15, 2011 for details.  We are the lengthened shadow of Chaminade in our times.

The founder of the Marianist spiritual family was born in France in 1761.  As the religious and laypeople of his charism celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth, there is hope that he will soon be recognized a saint.  A cure from cancer of a St. Louis woman might be the step that brings about his canonization.

Blessed William Joseph Chaminade (1761-1850) was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000, at the same time that Pope John XXIII was beatified.

In his homily, the Polish Pontiff spoke of Blessed Chaminade as a model of evangelization.  He reminds the faithful that it is their task to find ever new ways of bearing witness to the faith, especially in order to reach those who are far from the Church and who do not have the usual means of knowing Christ, the Holy Father said on that occasion.

ZENIT spoke with Father Antonio Gascón, general postulator of the congregation, about the canonization cause and other members of the Marianist family already recognized for their sanctity.

ZENIT: What significance is being drawn from the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Blessed Chaminade?

Father Gascón: It signifies a spiritual force in our life and mission, which we carry out in collaboration with hundreds of laypeople involved in our works and communities.  It is a burst of enthusiasm for our Marianist identity in the Church.

ZENIT: What is the status of the canonization process for the founder?

Father Gascón: The case of a woman in St. Louis, Missouri, is being studied.  She was cured of cancer in 2005.  The diocesan process has already closed and the case is with the Congregation for Saints' Causes.

Venezuela Bishops Decry Attacks on Religious Images
Call Leaders to Work for End of Intolerance

Source: Zenit (Rome) June 7, 2011

The bishops of Venezuela are speaking out against recent vandalism and destruction of religious images in the country, saying that these incidents are "unworthy of the spirit of respect."

A seven-point statement released Friday responded to incidents including a series of attacks on various religious statues, particularly in the state of Lara.

Many of the attacks were against popular images of Mary as a shepherdess, with a bullet leaving a hole in the cheek of one image and the lambs at the base of the statue being beheaded. Other statues were painted.

Ask a Marianist
Source: University of Dayton Magazine Summer, 2011

Amy Lopez-Matthews '86 answered the call in 2005 to become a Marianist Educational Associate, part of a lay community who steward Marianist and Catholic values on UD's campus and integrate the charism into their professions.  As director of Student Life and Kennedy Union, she employs eighty students annually and works with many more in UD's two hundred student organizations.

Question [from Robert Corgan]: In a culture of change, how does the Mother of God give us a role model?

Answer: She lived in a culture of change.  She didn't question it, didn't begrudge it, didn't wish it away, but accepted it and grew stronger through it--being there and saying "yes" and being so strong.  I love the passage of the visitation where they talk about Mary's confusion because I think we all have confusion and we think we shouldn't.  Many of us want clear-cut, even easy, answers.  Think about it--what's easy that we truly value?
