Called "Francesca and Friends: Why Mary,?" the program airs every Wednesday from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM EST focusing on: What is going on in the world about Mary, how to speak with others about Mary, and Mary in Scripture. On Wednesday, June 20, 2007, Francesca Franchina speaks with Christine Joy, a college coed attending a Catholic University about college life and Christianity. We have updated our answer to a reader question: Who is the Christ-child of Atocha? We have also added material about the "brothers and sisters" of Jesus in the Bible in English and in French, as well as a Marian Novena attributed to Fray Junipero Serra and a French-language article on Mary in the New Testament. We have also updated our material on the Franciscan Shrine to Our Lady of Sorrows in Valparaiso, Indiana since a reader has informed us that this shrine has been closed.
Pope's Address Upon Proclaiming Four Saints
Dear brothers and sisters, today we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy
Trinity. ... As we allow ourselves to be caught up in this great mystery, we
admire the glory of God which is reflected in the life of the saints; we
contemplate it above all in those whom I have a short while ago proposed for the
veneration of the universal Church: George Preca, Szymon of Lipnica, Father
Charles of St. Andrew, and Mother Eugenie of Jesus. ...
May Mary, the Queen of Saints, and the intercessor of these four new
"older brothers and sister," whom we venerate with joy today, obtain this grace
for us. Amen.
The director and editors of The Mary Page under the auspices of the
International Marian Research Institute do not necessarily endorse or agree with
the events and ideas expressed in this feature. Our sole purpose is to report on
items about Mary gleaned from a myriad of papers representing the secular press.
Mosque Named for Blessed Virgin
Mary
In an effort to show there's a common ground between Christians and Muslims, an
Australian imam named his house of worship in the sheep country between
Melbourne and Geelong the Virgin Mary Mosque, reported the Sydney Morning
Herald.
"Let us prove that Christianity and Islam have many things in common," said the
blind Somali named Sheik Isse Musse. "We both revere the Virgin Mary.
Second thing is generally Muslims name their schools, their mosques, their
streets, everything after men. Let us show there is nothing wrong in
naming a mosque after a person like Mary."
He added: "Some people could not digest it, but I kept explaining: 'Look, is not
the Virgin Mary mentioned in the holy Qur'an (Koran)? Isn't she a very
high and pious person? Yes. So what's stopping us giving her name to
our mosque?"
