MAGNA MATER (Great Mother)
2000
oil on canvas

"MAGNA MATER which means "great mother" in Latin, pays homage to the beautiful form of the pregnant woman.  As the bearer of life, the Blessed Mother and all mothers on this earth, convey hope for us all.  My goal in creating this image, and what I strived for, was to honor the sacrifice of the feminine body and celebrate the spiritual journey of birth.  The strength of this figure comes from within, from her understanding and acceptance of her position as the giver of life.  My earliest awareness of the power of women came from my wonderful mother who died too early.  It was she who showed me by example that life was meant to be given and lived with courage and dignity."
