Isaac Blessing Jacob

The focal point of this scene is the blessing given, and the blessing received. The single
most important pictorial element is the two pairs of oversized hands. They highlight the
crucial importance of the paternal blessing, warranting "abundance of new grain and wine," and
power over people. More important, Isaac's powerful hands, in stark contrast to the frailty of his
body, are anointing Jacob as heir and successor. In the midst of deceit and deception, the gesture
of Isaac's blessing has something final and irrevocable. It descends upon Jacob with might, giving
him strength and new stature, while Isaac, as he releases and communicates the God-given energy,
visibly withers and shrinks. Everything else is dwarfed by Isaac's gesture: the repast laid out by
Rebecca, her anxiety and guilt, and -in the distant background -probably the clueless Esau
resting beneath a palm tree.
